Sylvan Lake, Alberta, has received $5.3 million in provincial funding for a major water infrastructure project designed to secure the town’s long-term water supply. Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA and Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen presented the funding cheque to Town Council for the Northeast Gateway Water Supply Main project.
The new water supply main will run from the North Reservoir, following Township Road 391 to Range Road 12, also known as 30th Street, and ending at Cuendet Industrial Way. Installing a second main will improve water quality and provide a more reliable water distribution system for residents and businesses, according to the town’s 2020 Water Master Plan.
Pre-construction began on February 23, 2026, and the project is now in the construction phase, with completion expected by late 2026. The total budget is $7.85 million, with the remaining costs covered by the town through borrowing. The work is being coordinated with the Province of Alberta, Red Deer County, and CN Rail to meet all necessary requirements.
Sylvan Lake continues to experience steady growth, with the population reaching an estimated 17,897 in 2025, up from 16,597 in the 2021 Census. This water main expansion is a key part of the town’s plan to keep pace with increasing demand.
The announcement came just days after the Government of Alberta invested an additional $18.4 million through the Water for Life program to finish the final phase of the regional wastewater system for the Sylvan Lake area. Together, the two projects represent nearly $24 million in provincial infrastructure investment.
