Sidewalks in three parts of Gimli are getting a makeover after town council approved $500,000 in the 2026 budget for pathway improvements. The decision, made during a council meeting on July 8, 2026, will see new and upgraded concrete walkways installed to make it easier and safer for people to get around on foot.
Engineers looked at the sites, gathered feedback from residents, and presented design options before council gave the green light to go to tender on the work. All new sidewalks will be built with concrete and measure 2.75 metres wide.
The three areas that will see work are Centre Avenue West, 3rd Avenue West, and 2nd Avenue. On Centre Avenue West, a new pedestrian connection will be built between 7th Avenue and Autumnwood Drive. 3rd Avenue West will get a new link between North 5th Avenue and Amisk Drive. The existing sidewalk on 2nd Avenue between Centre Street and Lady of the Lake will be renewed.
In a separate but related move, council also awarded the 2026 Sidewalk and Curb Renewal Contract to The Whiteout Group. That contract is worth $35,619.75 plus taxes. It is not yet clear when construction will start, but the projects are now moving to the tendering phase.
The sidewalk improvements are part of a broader push to upgrade infrastructure in Gimli, a community of about 6,600 year-round residents that sees a big jump in visitors during summer months. Earlier this year, the province announced more than $2 million for Interlake infrastructure through the Growth, Renewal and Opportunities program, with $1 million earmarked for Gimli’s recreation centre campus plan and road renewal along Centennial Road and Autumnwood Drive.
