Starting August 31, Wainwright, Alberta will have a new 30 km/h speed limit in effect at all playground and school zones from 8 AM to 10 PM daily, year-round, including weekends and holidays.
The change, announced by the Town of Wainwright on July 22, comes under Bylaw 2026-03, which replaces previous playground and school zone speed rules. The new hours are much longer than old school-zone limits that were only active during class hours on school days.
Areas covered include Wainwright Elementary School, the ball diamonds on 5 Avenue, the Peace Memorial Multiplex at 650-2 Avenue, and the Wainwright Communiplex at 700-2 Avenue.
Wainwright Elementary School serves about 500 students in kindergarten through grade six and is part of Buffalo Trail Public Schools. A replacement facility is currently under construction to accommodate 495 students.
In addition, several intersections will become four-way stops once signage is installed. These include 5 Avenue at 11th Street and 14th Street, and 11 Avenue at 18th Street.
The Town’s bylaw enforcement officer Jeff Graham can be reached at 780-842-7119 for questions about the new rules.
