Gimli, Manitoba is in for a stretch of sun and warmth just in time for the weekend, after some showers and possible thunderstorms roll through earlier in the week. According to Environment Canada, the community can expect ideal conditions for beach visits and outdoor plans from Friday through Sunday.
Thursday will be the warmest day, with a high of 28°C and a humidex making it feel more like 31°C. However, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Gusty winds are also possible Wednesday evening, with a 30 percent chance of showers and a thunderstorm risk, along with southwest winds gusting up to 50 km/h before easing overnight.
Beginning Friday, the skies clear. August 7 through August 9 are forecast to be sunny, with daytime highs of 24 to 25°C. Overnight lows will settle around 12°C, slightly below the August normal low of 13°C. The daytime highs are also a touch below the 30-year climate normal high of 26°C for this time of year.
The sunny stretch arrives as Gimli Beach offers its 600 metres of sandy shoreline between the main harbour pier and Barney Thomas Drive. The beach has held Blue Flag status since May 2015, meaning it meets international standards for water quality, safety, and environmental management. Lake Winnipeg water temperatures in August usually range from 18 to 21°C, making the lake comfortable for swimming and water activities during the forecast clear days.
