TC Energy has picked Hinton, Alberta as the operations hub for its Colt Pipeline Project, with crews starting setup work next week. The town will host field offices, trailers, equipment, and construction yards near the corner of Highway 16 and Drinnan Way, and along Fleming Drive.
The project involves building a 17-kilometre, 48-inch natural gas pipeline that will connect two existing valve sites northwest of Edson in Yellowhead County. Hinton’s proximity to the work site, located approximately one hour north of town in Yellowhead County, was a key factor in the decision.
Work will ramp up through the fall, with peak activity expected in January 2027 when about 450 workers will be on the job. Construction activity is expected to taper off in March, with substantial completion anticipated by April 2027.
The Town of Hinton says the project will bring a noticeable boost to local businesses, restaurants, and places to stay as workers live in the community through the winter. The company and the town have been coordinating on traffic and community impacts.
The Colt Pipeline Project is being built by TC Energy’s NGTL system and has an estimated capital cost of $404 million, according to the Alberta Economic Dashboard. The pipeline is expected to go into service in the second quarter of 2027.
