Rimbey residents will soon have a new way to recycle, as blue 360-litre carts are being delivered to households this month ahead of a new recycling program launching October 1, 2026. The program is managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization that is taking over recycling services across Alberta.
The new carts replace the town’s previous blue bag program, which had been in place since 2011. Residents are asked to write their address on the white address bar on the side of their cart using a paint marker so collection crews can identify each household.
Pickups will be handled by Empringham Disposal Corp, a locally-owned company based in Red Deer County. The accepted materials list is also expanding, meaning residents will be able to recycle glass containers, foam packaging, flexible plastic packaging, empty aerosol containers, and laminated paper and plastic packaging.
The change is part of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework, which shifts the financial burden of recycling from municipalities and taxpayers to the companies that produce packaging and paper products. Rimbey is one of the Phase 2 communities joining the program this fall.
