Amherstburg households will start receiving new green bins the week of September 28, 2026, as the town joins the regional organics collection program run by the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA). Weekly collection, however, won’t begin until November 6, 2026.
Each home will get a kit that includes a 120-litre curbside bin, a 7-litre kitchen catcher, a how-to guide, and sample compostable bags. Residents should keep the bins until collection starts in November and use them for food scraps and other organic waste.
Amherstburg is part of the second phase of the program, along with Kingsville and Leamington. The first phase launched in October 2025 for Windsor, Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, and Tecumseh, where over 350 tonnes of organic waste were diverted from the landfill in just the first two weeks.
The province required Amherstburg to meet a 50% diversion target but provided no funding. Amherstburg residents will see the cost on their 2027 property tax bill, with a charge expected to be similar to the $154 to $161 annual fee approved for phase one municipalities. The collected organic material goes to Seacliff Energy in Leamington, where it’s turned into liquid fertilizer for local farms.
The Town of Amherstburg says more delivery details will be posted on its website, and residents can download the Recycle Coach app for notifications.
