Residents in parts of Amherstburg may notice temporary water pressure changes or discolored water as the town carries out its annual water valve exercising program from August through October 2026.
The work is happening in the area bounded by Front Road, Texas Road, Middle Side Road, and Concession Road 2, according to the Town of Amherstburg. Crews will be on site Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., weather permitting.
The program helps improve water system reliability, supports fire protection, and reduces the risk of unexpected service interruptions. During valve operations, sediment inside watermains can become disturbed, which may cause temporary fluctuations in water pressure and discoloured water.
If residents notice discoloured water, the town advises running a cold-water tap for several minutes until it clears. It also recommends avoiding laundry until the water is clear. If the issue persists, contact Infrastructure Services at 519-736-3664.
Valve exercising is a standard maintenance practice recommended by the American Water Works Association. It helps prevent valves from seizing, extends their lifespan, and allows staff to identify damage before a malfunction occurs.
The town’s water division operates and maintains the distribution system, while the Ontario Clean Water Agency handles daily operation of the water treatment plant. In January 2026, the Ontario government announced up to $3,741,250 in funding for water infrastructure rehabilitation in Amherstburg.
