Arviat residents woke up to heavy rain and a rainfall warning Monday morning, but the forecast calls for clearing skies and mild temperatures by midweek. Environment Canada issued a yellow rainfall warning for the community, with 15 millimetres already recorded since Sunday afternoon and another 10 to 20 millimetres expected through the day.
The rain is expected to taper off Monday evening, and Tuesday will bring clearing conditions with a high of 12°C. Sunshine returns Wednesday through Friday, with daytime highs reaching 13 to 15°C, near the seasonal norm high of 15°C for this time in August. Overnight lows are forecast around 6°C.
Current conditions at Arviat Airport showed light rain and a temperature of 10.5°C just before noon, with north winds gusting to 53 km/h and visibility reduced to 11 kilometres. No weather alerts are expected later in the week, and the forecast shows no accumulating snow, which is typical for this time of year in Arviat.
Arviat, located on the western shore of Hudson Bay, is no stranger to quick weather changes. The community of about 2,864 people often sees the influence of both Arctic air and southern systems, which can lead to sudden shifts in conditions like the rain and wind Monday.
