Monday’s misty conditions at Arviat Airport showed a temperature of 10°C with winds from the south-southeast at 24 km/h gusting to 34 km/h. Tuesday will bring periods of drizzle with a high of 12°C before skies clear for Wednesday and Thursday, both sunny with highs of 14°C. Friday will see a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 15°C, well above the early September normal of 11°C.
The warming trend is good news for outdoor activities. September is peak season for berry-picking and hunting in Nunavut, and warmer temperatures make conditions more comfortable for those spending time on the land.
Arviat, a predominantly Inuit hamlet on the western shore of Hudson Bay, has a subarctic climate and is not usually this warm in early fall. The forecast is part of a longer-term pattern of regional warming documented by the Nunavut Climate Change Secretariat, which reports increases of 1 to 3°C over the past century across the territory.
