Barrie residents should keep their umbrellas close as Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the Barrie – Collingwood – Hillsdale area, warning of showers and embedded thunderstorms that could bring significant rainfall through Tuesday morning. The statement, issued at 3:49 PM EDT on Monday, August 31, 2026, calls for local rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm, with some areas possibly exceeding 40 mm.
Some parts of the Barrie region have already received up to 25 mm of rain this morning, and another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected this afternoon and evening. Additional rainfall of 20 to 30 mm is possible, especially in areas that see thunderstorms. Environment Canada warns that water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas, and rainfall warnings may be required as the system moves through.
The unsettled weather is forecast to continue through Wednesday, with shower probabilities ranging from 30% to 90% and temperatures between 15°C and 27°C. According to The Weather Network, the highest precipitation risk is Tuesday night into Wednesday, when thunderstorm probability reaches 100%. Drier conditions are expected by Thursday.
Adding to the concern, Lake Simcoe water levels are currently about 31 centimetres above average for this time of year. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority is monitoring conditions closely, as shoreline flooding remains a risk in low-lying areas of Barrie and surrounding communities. Residents are advised to stay informed and avoid flooded roadways.
