A 25-year-old man from Scarborough is facing a series of human trafficking charges after an investigation by the Barrie Police Service that began in May 2026. Vincent Reid was arrested in Kitchener on July 15, 2026, following allegations he controlled a Barrie woman’s life for nearly two years.
Police say Reid exploited the woman’s substance dependency to force her into the sex trade and kept the money she earned. The investigation started after officers received reports of sexual exploitation, assault, threats, and controlling behaviour.
Reid now faces 10 criminal charges. They include trafficking in persons, procuring, material benefit from trafficking in person, material benefit from sexual services, advertising sexual services, assault, uttering threats, trafficking cocaine, and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
Investigators released Reid’s name and photo, along with a picture of a white Tesla he was known to drive. They believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward and are asking anyone with information to contact the Barrie Police Service Human Trafficking Unit.
Ontario deals with a large share of Canada’s human trafficking cases. About 58 percent of police-reported cases across the country happen in the province. The average age someone is recruited into sex trafficking is just 13 years old, and roughly two-thirds of victims identified by police are under 25. More than 90 percent of sex trafficking victims in Canada come from within the country.
To tackle the problem, Ontario has put more than $345 million into its Anti-Human Trafficking Strategy 2025-2030. Part of that effort includes the Intelligence-led Joint Forces Strategy, a multi-agency task force that, as of December 2024, had conducted 114 investigations, helped 174 victims, laid 366 human trafficking charges, and charged 61 people.
