Chestermere, Alberta is in for a wet and potentially stormy start to the week, with a slow-moving low-pressure system bringing rain and thunderstorm risks on Monday before conditions clear and warm up heading into mid-week.
According to Environment Canada, light rain was already falling across the area as of late Monday morning. Periods of rain are expected to taper off through the afternoon, but there remains a 60 percent chance of showers along with a risk of thunderstorms later today. Northwest winds will be noticeable, gusting up to 50 km/h, with a daytime high of only 17°C and a low UV index of 2.
Tonight stays unsettled with partly cloudy skies and a continuing chance of evening showers and thunderstorms. Winds will ease as the night goes on, and the temperature will drop to a low of 8°C. No weather alerts are currently in effect for the Chestermere area.
The outlook brightens considerably for the rest of the week. Tuesday is expected to be mainly sunny with a high of 22°C and a high UV index of 7, so residents heading outdoors should take sun protection. Sunny skies continue Wednesday with the temperature climbing to 26°C, and Thursday brings a mix of sun and cloud with a summery high of 28°C.
However, the stretch of fine weather may be short-lived. Environment Canada is calling for a return to unsettled conditions by Friday, with a mix of sun and cloud and a 60 percent chance of showers both Friday and Saturday. Friday will still be warm at 28°C, but Saturday cools to 21°C, and Sunday could bring periods of rain with a high of just 16°C.
The wet start to the week comes just as Chestermere Lake has been fully refilled for the summer season. The Western Irrigation District, which manages the reservoir, completes the annual refill each spring after a fall drawdown for maintenance. Lake access hours now run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and the public boat launch is open for the 2026 season. While the rainy conditions may put a damper on lake activities to start the week, the mid-week sunshine offers an ideal window for boating, fishing, and enjoying the water.
Residents with outdoor plans should stay aware of the thunderstorm risk on Monday and keep an eye on the forecast as showers return later in the week.
