The Rocky View Schools Board of Trustees has released the plan for its March 5, 2026, meeting, highlighting major building projects and rapid student growth in Chestermere, Alberta. The agenda outlines how local officials will manage a student population that is now nearing 29,600 children across the region.
Chestermere is the primary reason for the increase in student numbers in the area. To address the lack of space, the board is focusing on its building plan for the next three years, which lists a new school for 900 students from kindergarten to grade nine as a top priority for the city. The meeting will also cover items such as busing services and updates to school programs.
The provincial government has recently committed full construction funding for the new Chelsea high school in Chestermere. This project was previously only in the design phase, but the new money means the school can move forward to provide permanent classrooms for students in growing neighborhoods like Dawson’s Landing.
The board is also seeking community feedback on its plan for the next four years, with a public survey open until March 9, 2026. This comes as the school division continues to recover from a teachers’ strike in late 2025 that led to the cancellation of provincial exams for many students earlier this year.
Local representative Shelley Kinley recently spoke against adding more temporary portable classrooms at Rainbow Creek Elementary, suggesting the city needs permanent buildings instead. She and the City of Chestermere council are working to ensure that new school sites are ready to support the high number of families moving to the area.
