Starting in the February 2026 billing period, residents in Chestermere, Alberta, will see updates to their monthly utility bills. The City of Chestermere has adjusted these rates to cover the costs of local services and to fix aging community systems.
For the average household, the changes will add about $15.00 to the total monthly bill. These increases specifically affect water, sewer, and storm services to fund necessary maintenance and upgrades to the city’s pipes and water infrastructure.
At the same time, the city is lowering the rates for garbage collection and the Eco Centre. This decrease is happening because of a new provincial program that changes how recycling is funded across Alberta.
The program, known as Extended Producer Responsibility, shifts the cost of recycling away from local taxpayers and onto the companies that make the products. This allows the city to reduce the fees residents pay for these specific waste services.
Local officials say these rate changes are necessary to ensure that utility services remain safe and reliable for the community. The goal is to balance the need for system repairs with the cost savings provided by new provincial rules.
