The City of Colwood, B.C. is hiring a new Safety and Wellness Advisor, weeks after reaching a tentative agreement with its unionized workers following a heated labour dispute that centred on employee health and wellness.
The full-time permanent role is posted until July 31, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. and offers a recruitment salary range of $98,653.26 to $116,062.65 per year. The successful candidate will report to the Manager of Human Resources and help coordinate workplace health and safety programs for the city’s nearly 120 employees.
According to the job posting, the advisor will handle WorkSafeBC claims, support return-to-work plans, and help the city maintain its Certificate of Recognition (COR) designation with WorkSafeBC, a voluntary safety certification.
The new position comes just weeks after the city and CUPE Local 374, which represents roughly 70 municipal workers, reached a tentative deal on June 16, 2026. Prior to mediation, union members voted 92 per cent in favour of a strike after the city proposed eliminating dedicated paid leave for medical appointments and requiring workers to use sick time instead. The union had warned the change could force employees to choose between their health and their job.
Chief Administrative Officer Jason Johnson said in a statement last month that throughout negotiations the city remained focused on reaching an agreement that “recognizes the important contributions of our employees, supports their health and well-being, and remains sustainable for the residents and businesses who rely on City services.”
Applicants need at least a one-year Occupational Health and Safety certificate (or a two-year diploma in a related field), CRST certification, and three years of safety advising experience in a unionized workplace. Full details are available on the city’s employment page.
