A 38-year-old man from the Rural Municipality of West St. Paul is facing charges after a road rage incident involving a firearm on Highway 8, a major route connecting Winnipeg to Gimli, Manitoba.
On March 21, 2026, at approximately 8:11 p.m., Red River North RCMP and Selkirk RCMP responded to a report of a weapons offence near Grassmere Road. A 35-year-old driver told police that another motorist pointed a handgun at him during a confrontation on the highway. Roughly 20 minutes later, officers located the suspect vehicle at a home in the Rural Municipality of West St. Paul and took the driver into custody.
Jagdeep Dhaliwal, 38, has been charged with pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, and unsafe storage of a firearm. Following a search of the residence, police recovered a CO2-powered air pistol and two long guns. Dhaliwal has been released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court in Winnipeg on April 21, 2026.
This incident occurs as local commuters continue to raise concerns regarding safety along Highway 8. The stretch of road between Selkirk and Gimli has been described as incredibly dangerous, with at least three fatalities from head-on collisions reported since 2021. To address these hazards, construction is currently underway on passing lanes along the 54-kilometre single-lane section between Highway 67 and Provincial Road 231. The project, which aims to improve safety for travelers, is expected to be finished in the fall of 2026.
