The Island Waste Management Corporation is planning a major upgrade to waste handling in Kensington and across eastern Prince Edward Island. The organization has issued a request for proposals to design and build a new transfer station at the East Prince Waste Management Facility in Wellington Centre.
This project aims to modernize how waste is processed in the region by creating a central location to consolidate materials before they are moved to disposal sites. The proposal period for engineering services is open until June 19, 2026, at 2:00 PM.
The East Prince site has been a cornerstone of local infrastructure since it opened in December 1994. Its creation marked a significant shift in provincial waste management, as it replaced 65 community dumps and various regional landfills, including those in St. Eleanors, Cardigan, and Charlottetown. Today, the facility operates under the guidance of facility supervisor Elizabeth Mallett.
This infrastructure expansion arrives as the region continues to participate in the Waste Watch Program, which requires residents to sort waste into compost, recycling, and regular garbage. These efforts have helped Islanders achieve high diversion rates from the landfill. This work is supported by broader service changes, such as the 2024 contract awarded to GFL Environmental Inc. to handle garbage collection for residents in the area, including those in Kensington.
