The City of Leduc has received a $1.9 million installment from the federal government to support local housing projects, bringing the total funding secured to $3.9 million of a promised $7.6 million grant. This funding, provided through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, aims to help the city meet its housing targets as the population continues to grow.
According to the City of Leduc, the municipality has already achieved 76 per cent of its overall housing unit goals. To date, three of seven projects supported by the grant have been completed. These finished initiatives include a pilot housing incentive program, a concierge service designed to speed up the approval process for new developments, and a study on parking and public transportation.
Mayor Lars Hansen noted that the investment is focused on ensuring residents have access to housing. By removing administrative barriers and supporting a wider variety of home types, the city aims to provide more options for people living in Leduc now and in the future.
Four additional initiatives are currently underway to further expand housing variety. These include efforts to allow four-unit buildings in more areas, as well as the creation of a design catalogue featuring pre-approved plans to simplify the construction process. These projects are expected to be integrated into the city’s land use rules to help meet remaining housing targets over the next two years.
