Halton Region has finished a major environmental study for expanding the Mid-Halton sewer treatment plant to help support new housing and growth in Milton, Ontario. The study, completed on March 2, 2026, marks a key step in increasing the region’s ability to handle sewer waste as more people move into the area.

The project aims to increase the plant’s treatment capacity from 125 million litres to 195 million litres per day by 2031. This expansion is designed to provide essential services for new neighbourhoods being built in Milton and along the Highway 401 corridor in Halton Hills.

According to a notice regarding Milton Water and Wastewater, the region is working to take over certain pieces of land to make room for new pipes. Residents can expect to see construction activity like underground tunnelling and digging as these new sewer lines are connected to local neighbourhoods over the next five years.

These upgrades are part of the Sustainable Halton Water and Wastewater Master Plan, which helps the region meet provincial goals for building new homes. The public has until March 31, 2026, to review the final study results and provide feedback to the regional government.
