Sustainable Milton is hosting a free climate action speaker event on April 16, 2026, to discuss environmental issues and community resilience in Milton.
The event will feature guest speaker Donna Freedman, who has previously addressed members of the federal cabinet and Members of Parliament on climate-related topics. The presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. at 7513 Tremaine Rd., at a location known as In the Barn. Following the presentation, Sustainable Milton will hold a regular board meeting, which is open to the public.
Beyond speaker events, the organization is active in local environmental stewardship. Residents are invited to participate in a spring cleanup and invasive species removal project on April 25, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The cleanup will take place at the Indian Creek Trail, located across from the Sherwood Community Centre. Volunteers will focus on removing buckthorn, a highly invasive plant that can crowd out native vegetation.
Sustainable Milton was founded in January 2020 by local residents following a 2019 decision by the town to declare a climate emergency. The group works to enhance local biodiversity by planting native species and maintaining naturalized areas, often in collaboration with the Town of Milton and Conservation Halton. To date, the organization has helped plant 1,810 native plants and removed more than 226 bags of litter from the community.
In addition to these hands-on efforts, the organization advocates for local environmental policy. Wendy Roberts, vice-chair of Sustainable Milton, has frequently appeared before town council to request ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets and the hiring of a dedicated manager for climate change sustainability.
