Major road closures started on March 25, 2026, along Commonwealth Avenue and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, as crews work to finish the final section of the Team Gushue Highway. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says these closures are expected to stay in place until July 31, 2026.
All ramps at the Heavy Tree Road interchange on Pitts Memorial Drive are now closed, and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive is shut down from Ruby Line to Brookfield Road. Drivers are being asked to follow detour signs that lead through Ruby Line and Southlands Boulevard or Bay Bulls Road to get around the work site.
The construction is part of a 30-million-dollar project to build a new roundabout and connect the highway to local streets. This highway project was first planned about 30 years ago and is expected to be completely finished by the end of 2026.
Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker says that while the closures will cause some trouble for now, the finished road will stop outside traffic from using local streets as shortcuts. City records show many drivers passing through residential areas are actually trying to reach the Southern Shore and Goulds.
