The City of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, has moved garbage and recycling pick-up to Saturday after a major winter storm stopped service on March 24, 2026. Residents are asked to have their bins at the curb by 8:00 AM on March 28, 2026.
According to the City of Mount Pearl, the delay happened because the storm brought 30 to 50 centimetres of heavy snow to the area. Mayor Dave Aker explained that the city uses the same workers for both trash collection and snow plowing, so staff had to focus on clearing the roads during the worst part of the storm.
The storm brought wind gusts of 100 kilometres per hour and freezing rain to the region, leading Environment Canada to issue a winter storm warning. This weather comes during an unusually snowy year, as February 2026 was the snowiest February ever recorded for the St. John’s area with 178 centimetres of snow.
Other nearby towns like Paradise and Conception Bay South also had to change their waste pick-up days because of the heavy snowfall. Drivers in Mount Pearl are also reminded to follow the winter parking ban, which keeps cars off the streets overnight and during storms to help plows clear the way safely.
