Mount Pearl is preparing to celebrate its 38th birthday with the annual City Days festival taking place on July 17-19. The event marks the anniversary of the city’s incorporation on July 21, 1988, when it became the third community in Newfoundland and Labrador to gain city status.
Every summer, the city puts on a mix of free, family-friendly activities to mark the occasion. In past years, those have included a Classic Car Show at the Miller Centre, a multi-cultural community market at St. David’s Park, outdoor movies, and concerts by local Newfoundland musicians. The Mega Birthday Bash at the Ruth Avenue Sportsplex is often a highlight, drawing big crowds for live music and fireworks.
The celebration dates back to July 21, 1988, when Mount Pearl officially became a city. As the Come to Life in Mount Pearl campaign puts it, “Every year around that time we celebrate our birthday” with activities for all ages. The city is home to about 25,000 people.
While the full schedule for 2026 hasn’t been released yet, residents can expect a similar lineup of popular events alongside some new additions. Last year, the city introduced “City Days 2.0” in August to tie into the 2025 Canada Games, bringing extra festivities to the Canada Games site. Past events have also included a pet walk called Paws in the Park and a Family Fun Day with the Admiralty House Communications Museum.
The city’s recreation department organizes the festival, often working with local groups like the Association for the Arts in Mount Pearl and event producers Blackwood Events NL. More details will be posted on the city website and social media as the date approaches.
