The Town of Ponoka is looking to fill a new permanent full-time position focused on attracting and keeping businesses in the community. The Economic Development Specialist job is now accepting applications until August 10, 2026, though the posting also notes the position is open until a suitable candidate is found.
The role is part of the Communications and Economic Development department and will report to the Manager of Communications and Economic Development. The person hired will work on business retention, expansion, and bringing new investment to town, as well as other economic development projects.
The salary ranges from $47.93 to $58.92 per hour. The job also comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, life insurance, disability coverage, a flexible health and wellness spending account, paid vacation, sick leave, and enrollment in the Local Authorities Pension Plan.
The job ad says the new specialist will also administer the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program Rural Entrepreneur Stream for the town, which helps attract entrepreneurs from outside Canada to set up shop in the community.
Economic development is already a major focus for the town. Council’s Strategic Plan for 2023-2027 lists Growth and Economic Health as one of four key priorities. The town gave out 352 business licences in 2025, with 22 of them going to new businesses. Ponoka also offers incentives like a New Business Grant of up to $1,000 and a Commercial New Build Incentive that can cut property taxes by up to 75 per cent in the first year for new commercial construction.
People interested in applying need a post-secondary degree or diploma in fields like marketing, economics, business administration, or commerce, and three to five years of experience in economic development or a related area.
