Sidney residents interested in shaping local education can learn what it takes to become a school trustee at an upcoming information meeting hosted by the Saanich School District. The event runs Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the School Board Office, 2125 Keating Cross Road in Saanichton.
Superintendent Dave Eberwein and Secretary Treasurer Jason Reid will walk prospective candidates through the job’s core duties, explain how the district works, and outline the time commitment involved. School trustees listen to their communities, hire the superintendent, set the annual budget, and create policies that reflect local priorities, according to the BC School Trustees Association.
The session comes ahead of British Columbia’s general local elections on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Sidney sits in Trustee Electoral Area #2 and elects one person to the seven-member board. Anyone who wants to run must file nomination papers between September 1 and September 11, 2026, and be nominated by two eligible Sidney electors.
Nomination packages will be available at Sidney Town Hall by the end of July 2026. While the board represents the entire Saanich Peninsula, Sidney’s lone trustee speaks directly for the community’s educational needs. With approximately 525 students at Parkland Secondary School alone, the decisions made around the board table affect daily life for hundreds of families.
