Southwestern Public Health is asking for the public’s help to identify the owner of a dog involved in a bite incident that took place in St. Thomas on April 2, 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Balaclava Street. A person was walking down the street when they passed a man and a woman who were both walking dogs. The dog being walked by the woman jumped up and bit the individual on the arm.
The dog is described as a large, dark brown, short-haired mixed breed wearing a black collar. The woman walking the dog is described as being in her 20s with brown hair.
Health officials are seeking this information to confirm the animal’s rabies vaccination status. This confirmation is necessary to help the victim and their healthcare provider determine if the victim requires rabies post-exposure treatment. Under Ontario law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets over three months of age must be vaccinated against rabies.
Anyone who may have information about the dog or its owner is asked to contact the health unit at 1-800-922-0096 and ask to speak with a Public Health Inspector.
