The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation is marking its 40th anniversary this year by announcing that community donations have surpassed $80 million since the organization began in 1985. This milestone, which highlights four decades of support for patient care in St. Thomas and Elgin County, is featured in the April 2026 edition of This Month in Elgin.
Founded by community leaders to ensure high-quality healthcare remains available close to home, the foundation has grown to include more than 3,300 individual, family, and business donors, along with over 50 supporting service groups. Ryan Byrne, who was appointed executive director in January 2026, says these contributions are essential for providing the specialized equipment and technology that patients need.
Community generosity funds the MRI scans that provide earlier diagnoses, the hospital beds that support a growing population, and the emergency equipment that saves lives when minutes matter.
Over the last 40 years, the foundation has funded a wide range of hospital improvements, including the North Tower expansion and the acquisition of the region’s first magnetic resonance imaging scanner. More recent contributions have provided funds for smart hospital beds, patient monitoring units, and laboratory equipment. Hospital leadership notes that as care demands in the community become more complex, the role of private fundraising will continue to be a necessary complement to government support.
As the foundation enters its next chapter under the 2026 fundraising theme of Community Leadership, it continues to rely on a variety of revenue sources, including major gifts, legacy giving, and community events. The organization, which is an accredited member of Imagine Canada, operates out of its headquarters on Elm Street in St. Thomas with a small staff and a volunteer board of directors led by Board Chair Rebecca Kapogiannis.
