St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is reminding residents across Elgin County to take care as dangerously hot weather settles over the region. Environment Canada heat warnings that began June 30, 2026, are forecasting temperatures as high as 36 degrees Celsius this week, with high humidity and little relief overnight.
The hospital now features a Stay Safe in Extreme Heat message on its homepage. The notice warns, “When the weather gets too hot, it can harm your health,” and directs people to learn how to protect themselves and their loved ones.
The Ontario Ministry of Health says everyone is at risk during extreme heat, but some groups face greater danger. Seniors, young children, infants, pregnant people, and those with chronic conditions like heart or lung disease are more vulnerable. Outdoor workers and people without stable housing also need extra caution.
Southwestern Public Health has opened cooling centres around the region for anyone needing an air-conditioned space with seating and water. The Joe Thornton Community Centre is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the INN provides 24-hour access for eligible individuals.
Health experts advise watching for signs of heat stroke, which can include confusion, dizziness, a rapid pulse, and body temperature above 41 degrees Celsius. If someone shows these symptoms, call 911 right away and cool them down with lukewarm water.
