St. Thomas Shock Basketball is still looking for volunteer coaches to lead its competitive teams this fall, even though the formal application window closed June 25, 2026. The not-for-profit says no prior coaching experience is needed and it will cover all training and certification costs.
The group, which has run youth basketball in St. Thomas and area since 2003, needs head and assistant coaches for teams ranging from under-10 to under-19 age groups for the 2026-2027 season. “We are currently looking for Head and Assistant Coaches for our Shock competitive teams,” the organization stated on its website. The Shock’s coaching page makes clear that volunteers get ongoing mentorship and become part of a supportive coaching community.
The recruitment comes after a standout 2025-2026 season in which the under-10 boys won Ontario Cup Division Two and the under-11 boys captured Division Five, both finishing undefeated. The Shock’s under-19 girls also claimed the Ontario Basketball Association G-Elite First Division championship. Those successes have raised the program’s profile but also increased the need for more coaches as interest grows.
St. Thomas Shock is entirely volunteer-run, from its board of directors to bench staff. The organization started in the early 1990s as a girls-only club and has since expanded to offer skill clinics and competitive teams for boys and girls across multiple age divisions. “Our focus has always been on core skill development, teamwork and, above all else, fun,” the group says on its programs page.
Community members who want to help can still reach out through the Shock’s website. With the season set to begin in the fall, organizers say even volunteers without basketball backgrounds can make a difference.
