During the week of March 13, 2026, a local representative presented a petition to the Manitoba Legislature calling for the construction of a new personal care home in Stonewall, Manitoba. Trevor King, the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Lakeside, read the petition to emphasize that local seniors should be able to receive care close to their families.
The community currently has access to Rosewood Lodge, which provides 50 long-term care beds. However, according to the Stonewall & District PCH campaign, the surrounding region has the lowest number of care beds per person in Manitoba and is currently short about 400 beds.
In July 2023, the provincial government originally announced plans for a 143-bed facility in Stonewall. These plans were later paused for a spending review in December 2023 after a change in provincial leadership.
On March 19, 2026, the Manitoba government confirmed that construction is moving forward on similar projects in Lac du Bonnet and Arborg. The announcement did not mention the previously planned facility for Stonewall, which has prompted concern among local residents.
The Stonewall community has already committed to raising $10 million toward the cost of the new regional care home. Supporters of the project say the new building is necessary to address a critical shortage of beds that often forces seniors to wait for care in hospitals far from home.
