Sylvan Lake, Alberta, property owners will see lower municipal tax rates on their 2026 bills, but that won’t stop most from paying more overall. The Town of Sylvan Lake has set the residential mill rate at 0.00567015 per dollar of assessed value, down from 0.00663100 in 2025. The commercial rate also dropped, from 0.01174300 to 0.01078216.
Despite the rate cuts, tax bills are climbing. The average single-family home assessment jumped 7.5 percent this year to $448,282. At the same time, the provincial education tax the town must collect surged 18.2 percent, adding $1.5 million to the local requisition, from $8.24 million in 2025 to $9.74 million in 2026.
“As property values rise, the same tax rate applied to a higher assessment results in a higher dollar amount,” said Mayor Megan Hanson. For the average home, roughly $162 more will go toward education taxes alone. Council held off on a municipal rate increase for the second year in a row, leaning on extra pay parking revenue, assessment growth from new construction, and deferring more than $400,000 in projects.
Combined assessment and tax notices went out the week of May 22. The payment deadline is July 31, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Anyone who hasn’t received their notice should contact the town right away to avoid late penalties.
