On March 4, 2026, a local basketball coach in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, began calling for better access to indoor sports facilities after being warned by police for playing on outdoor courts in temperatures as low as -40 C. Darren Apels reported that he has been forced to play outside because he cannot find safe or available indoor gym space in the community.
Apels, who works as a basketball skills trainer, said he has had to shovel snow off outdoor courts to keep playing during the extreme cold. He claims that members of the RCMP approached him and warned that he could face fines or arrest if he continued to use the outdoor courts during the current weather conditions.
The Town of Sylvan Lake operates several recreation sites, including the NexSource Centre and the Sylvan Lake Wellness and Community Connections Centre, the latter of which provides an indoor gymnasium and basketball equipment for public use. The town also offers outdoor courts at Pogadl Sports Park, but these are difficult to use during harsh Alberta winters.
While the town has these facilities, the recent police intervention has highlighted a struggle for residents who want to play sports without booking a space in advance. Apels argues that existing indoor options are not meeting the needs of local athletes, forcing them to choose between dangerous outdoor conditions or not playing at all.
