The Province of Prince Edward Island is continuing drainage and road improvements on Robertson Road and Route 4 in Three Rivers, Prince Edward Island. The work, which includes installing new left-turn lanes and replacing the stormwater system, is carrying on into 2026.
The Town of Three Rivers is also working on the site to extend water and sewer lines while the road is already open. Local officials say completing these tasks at the same time prevents the need to dig up new pavement in the future, which saves money and reduces future traffic problems.
Funding for the municipal water and sewer portion of the project comes from the Canadian Community-Building Fund. These federal funds are specifically dedicated to local infrastructure projects that help communities manage long-term growth.
While the roadwork supports the region’s development, which reached a record $60.4 million in 2025, some business owners say the detours have caused a 20 per cent drop in sales. Mayor Debbie Johnston and town staff are in regular contact with provincial officials to address traffic delays and support local shops during the construction.
Motorists should continue to follow all detour signs and expect single-lane traffic as crews finish resurfacing the road and building a new walking trail. The project originally began in June 2025 just north of the Down East Mall and is part of a larger effort to update roads for the growing population.
