Dan Williams, Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, met with officials from the Vermilion region on July 21, 2026, to hear about pressing infrastructure needs and discuss provincial support. The gathering in Vermilion brought together leaders from the Town of Vermilion, the County of Vermilion River, the Village of Marwayne, and the Village of Kitscoty.
Williams is on a summer tour that will take him to more than 92 communities across the province, highlighting nearly $200 million in capital funding delivered through the Local Government Fiscal Framework over the past two years. The program provides $860 million to Alberta municipalities in 2026, split between $800 million for capital projects and $60 million for operating costs.
At the meeting, Vermilion-area leaders outlined several projects they hope to advance with provincial help. The Town of Vermilion is looking for $2.145 million to upgrade its airport, which Mayor Robert Snow has called a priority for economic development and health-care medevac flights. The town is also replacing a $1.62 million sanitary trunk line and wants to extend a $2.25 million sewer main to open more land for housing.
The County of Vermilion River, which serves roughly 8,267 residents from its office in Kitscoty, is part of a larger plan to build about 96 kilometres of water line that would provide reliable water to 18 communities in the region. Residents can expect follow-up announcements in the coming months as the province evaluates the region’s requests.
