Families in Wainwright, Alberta looking for free and low-cost kids’ activities this July and August can turn to the Wainwright Public Library, which has rolled out a full lineup of summer programs. But parents should hurry, as many sessions are already at full capacity.
The library’s summer lineup runs through July and August, with the Summer Reading Program taking centre stage from July 6 to August 19. The seven-week program is split into age groups: Grades 1-3 meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m., while Grades 4-7 gather from 3 to 4:30 p.m. This year’s theme is ‘Carried Away: Read, Explore, Soar.’
Story in the Park, Nature Adventures, and Fairytale Fun are among the other offerings, but spaces are tight. As of today, Story in the Park has all 16 reserved spots filled, though five names can still be added to the waiting list. All July Nature Adventures sessions are full with waiting lists started, though a few spots remain in the August Nature Adventures sessions for Grades 4-7. All Fairytale Fun slots are also taken with waitlists in place.
Registration is required for most programs, and families can browse schedules and sign up for waitlists on the library’s online events calendar. The library also invites kids to join ‘Friday 15,’ a weekly reading challenge where reading for just 15 minutes enters participants in a prize draw and helps the community vie for the title of ‘Most Readerly Community’ within the Northern Lights Library System.
Programs take place at the library, located at 921-3rd Avenue in the Centennial Centre, and at local parks. The library serves a community of roughly 6,600 residents, plus an estimated 600 military families from nearby CFB Wainwright.
