The Hamlet of Arviat, Nunavut, is making it easier for residents and businesses to plan property projects by centralizing its land development and building permit resources. Through the local Planning and Lands department, the community now has direct access to zoning rules, street maps, and the forms needed to start new construction or home improvements.
This initiative comes as the community prepares for significant growth following the announcement in February 2026 that Arviat will host the main campus for the Inuit Nunangat University. The university is expected to open in 2030 and will be the first Inuit-led university in the country.
The Hamlet of Arviat uses a community plan and zoning laws that were first established in 2010 to manage how land is used. By putting these documents and development permit applications in one place, the town aims to help people navigate municipal requirements more quickly.
To help with local housing needs, a modular home factory is also under construction in the community with the goal of building up to 40 homes every year.
