Residents in Arviat, Nunavut, are seeing an increase in military activity as the Canadian Armed Forces carry out their annual northern training drills. These exercises, which include standard readiness maneuvers, are taking place in several communities across the territory until March 13, 2026.
Known as Operation Nanook, the training is designed to help the military practice working in tough Arctic weather. This year is the largest version of the event so far, involving up to 1,300 personnel from the Canadian Armed Forces and allied nations across the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
Nunavut Emergency Management is keeping the public informed about the movement of troops during the exercise. The drills are part of a broader effort to focus on northern defense, Arctic sovereignty, and making sure the forces are prepared to operate in the region.
People living in Arviat may notice more military members and equipment than usual while the exercises are underway. The Joint Task Force (North) is overseeing the maneuvers, which include various readiness drills to refine military capabilities in harsh environments.
