On March 3, 2026, the federal government launched a major funding initiative to build new roads and transportation links in Arviat, Nunavut. The investment is part of a strategic plan to help isolated northern communities stay connected, create more local jobs, and secure the region for the future.
The Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport, announced the launch of calls for proposals for the $1 billion Arctic Infrastructure Fund and the $5 billion Trade Diversification Corridors Fund. These programs, later highlighted by Prime Minister Mark Carney as part of a broader $40 billion Arctic security plan, will fund projects such as expanding airport runways and improving transportation between communities that currently lack road access.
Arviat is a central focus of this infrastructure push, as it will serve as a key node for the 1,200 km Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link. The Kivalliq Inuit Association, through Nukik Corporation, is leading the project with support from the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. to bring renewable power and high-speed internet to the region.
The community is also the future home of the main campus for the Inuit Nunangat University, which will provide new education opportunities locally. To help house more people and workers, a local factory that builds modular homes is expected to be completed and operational in April 2026.
