The Lacombe County council has approved $89,356 in funding to help pay for a new sports field and facility upgrades in Blackfalds, Alberta. The decision was made during a meeting on February 12, 2026, to support recreation projects that serve both town and county residents.
The largest portion of the money, totaling $86,731, will go toward building a new football and soccer field at the Iron Ridge Secondary Campus. This high school field project has a total cost of more than $578,000 and is a major part of the community’s long-term growth plan.
An additional $2,625 was approved for renovations at the Abbey Centre to upgrade its guest services area. The county contribution covers 15 per cent of the total costs for these projects, which is the standard rate used for recreation agreements with local municipalities.
The Town of Blackfalds continues to invest in new amenities as its population reaches over 12,200 people. These local projects are funded through a county reserve that collects a yearly fee from rural residents to support shared sports and culture facilities.
