Residents of Arviat should take precautions against the cold this weekend as Environment Canada forecasts light snow and dangerously low wind chill values through April 5, 2026. The weather agency has identified a risk of frostbite for the community, as wind chill factors are expected to remain well below the point where skin can freeze in a short amount of time.
For Friday, April 3, temperatures are expected to reach a high of -15°C with wind chill values hitting -33 in the morning. These conditions pose a significant health risk, as Environment Canada notes that wind chill levels between -28 and -39 can cause exposed skin to freeze within 10 to 30 minutes. Health Canada advises that the risk of frostbite and windburn increases significantly when wind chill values drop below -27.
Conditions are expected to show slight improvement on Saturday, April 4, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of -15°C. However, the wind chill is forecast to remain at -30 during the morning hours, maintaining the risk of frostbite for anyone spending time outdoors.
To stay safe during this cold spell, health officials recommend wearing warm layers, including gloves, hats, and socks. Covering the nose with a scarf is also recommended to provide additional protection against the extreme cold in Arviat, a hamlet of approximately 2,864 residents on the western shore of Hudson Bay.
