The Lions Club of Beausejour is celebrating another successful year of its annual food drive, a community tradition that continues to provide vital support for the local food bank. Organized by the club, the event relies on the dedication of volunteers and local youth groups to collect non-perishable goods for residents in need.
The effort is part of a long-standing partnership between the service club and the Beausejour and Area Food Bank, which was established by Gerald and Pamela Hawranik. Since the Lions first began their annual canvass in 1991, the community has consistently stepped up to help. The project has seen significant results over the years, including the collection of over 1,600 pounds of food in 2006 and 1,246 pounds in 2012.
A key element of this ongoing success is the involvement of local youth organizations. The 249 Beausejour Air Cadet Squadron began participating in the food drive in 1997, and they were soon joined by local Cubs, Scouts, and Girl Guides. These groups play a major role in the efficiency of the annual collection, allowing volunteers to cover the entire area in a single night.
The Beausejour and Area Food Bank, located at 730 Park Ave, continues to serve the community by providing short-term food supplies free of charge to families. The facility is open to the public every Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon.
The Lions Club of Beausejour has served the region since it was first chartered on November 22, 1948. For those looking to support the ongoing work of the food bank throughout the year, donations can be coordinated directly with the organization.
