The Town of Blackfalds is moving forward with a new sanitary infrastructure project on the east side of the community, aimed at supporting planned residential growth. Town council is set to award a construction contract to Timcon Construction Ltd. for the McKay Ranch Lift Station at a cost of $3,796,971.05.
This project is designed to provide sanitary servicing for the eastern side of town and will allow for sewage flows from future northern developments to be pumped to the regional sewer system for treatment. The awarded contract comes in 11.7% under the town’s initial cost estimate.
The development of this lift station was originally proposed in 2022 but was paused when the developer put plans for the area on hold. After the developer decided to resume Phase 4 residential work in late 2025, the project was re-tendered for construction. Following the April 2026 tender closing, the town received ten bids, though two were not opened because they arrived after the submission deadline.
To fund the project, council has approved Bylaw 1348.26, which allows the town to borrow up to $5.6 million. Town officials confirmed that the loan will be repaid using future off-site levies collected from developers. This approach is intended to ensure that the project does not impact local taxes or utility rates for current residents.
Timcon Construction Ltd. is currently working on the town’s Broadway Avenue Reservoir Expansion and has previously completed similar lift station projects in the region. Construction for the new facility is expected to continue through 2027.
