Residents can now buy tickets for a kids saddle raffle launched by the Claresholm Agriplex to support the upcoming CFB Breakaway Event this August in Claresholm, Alberta. The online raffle aims to raise money for the event, with tickets purchased through a form on the Agriplex website and paid by e-transfer.
The Agriplex, run by the Willow Creek Agricultural Society, has been a local hub for western equine activities since its grand opening on June 27, 1977. The facility at 380 59th Avenue West hosts year-round events, from rodeos to team roping, and is the annual home of the Canadian Finals Breakaway competition — a separate event typically held in October that provides one of the largest one-day payouts in Canadian rodeo.
Breakaway roping is a timed event where a rider ropes a calf around the neck, and the rope breaks free from the saddle once the catch is secure. Winning times can clock in under two seconds, making it one of the fastest-growing rodeo sports. The Canadian Finals Breakaway in Claresholm typically offers the largest one-day payout in the country at close to $40,000.
Earlier this month, the Agriplex hosted the Alberta High School Finals Rodeo from June 3 to 7, showcasing young rodeo talent. The August CFB Breakaway Event continues that tradition of community-driven competition.
