Residents of Arviat, Nunavut can look forward to a steady warm-up this week, with temperatures climbing from 14 C on Monday to around 20 C by Saturday, according to Environment Canada. The warming trend will break the early-week cloud cover and bring ideal outdoor conditions by mid-week.
Monday started with periods of drizzle and fog, with a 60 percent chance of showers overnight, but skies are expected to clear by Wednesday. Wednesday’s high is forecast at 16 C under sunny skies, rising to 19 C on Thursday and reaching 20 C by Saturday with a mix of sun and cloud.
The forecast highs are well above the normal July maximum for the community. Environment Canada’s forecast page lists the normal high at 17 C and low at 6 C, while the 1991–2020 climate normals show an average daily maximum of 15.2 C. Arviat, a mostly Inuit hamlet of about 2,800 people on the western shore of Hudson Bay, has seen extreme heat before—most recently on July 17, 2019, when the temperature hit 28 C and set a new record for that date.
The settling weather will be welcome news for many in the community, where hunting and fishing remain central to daily life. With close to 19 hours of daylight this time of year, the sunny and warm conditions offer a good window for outdoor activities.
