Bonnyville is under an air quality warning today as wildfire smoke from northern Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories drifts into the region. Environment Canada issued the Yellow Warning early Monday morning, July 20, 2026, cautioning that poor air quality and reduced visibility are likely throughout the day.
The smoke is forecast to stick around tonight, with a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers and a risk of thunderstorms. Temperatures will reach 24°C, feeling like 27 with the humidity, and winds could gust up to 40 km/h near noon. People with existing illnesses or chronic health conditions, the elderly, pregnant people, young children, and those who work outside are urged to limit time outdoors.
Health officials stress there is no safe level of wildfire smoke exposure. It can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, cause headaches, coughing, and chest pain, and in severe cases lead to heart attack or stroke. Anyone in a high-risk group should consider wearing an N95 mask if they have to be outside and watch for symptoms.
Looking ahead, the smoke is expected to clear by Tuesday night, giving way to sunny skies and a warm-up. Highs will climb to 29°C on Wednesday, 31°C on Thursday, and 32°C on Friday, before a mix of sun and cloud returns Saturday with a high of 28°C.
