Blackfalds, Alberta’s Standing Committee of Council will discuss a possible disc golf course and get an update on the community’s environmental plan at its meeting tonight, July 20, 2026. The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. at the Civic Cultural Centre on 5018 Waghorn Street and is open to residents.
The disc golf idea began with a Notice of Motion at the March 10, 2026 regular council meeting. Staff then put together a plan for a course at McKay Ranch. A layout was shown to the Recreation, Culture and Parks Board on June 3, 2026, where it got general support. The course would go in over two steps. First, five holes would be set up in the existing park area soon. The other four holes would come later, once the McKay Ranch green space is fully developed. The baskets for the course have already been bought and are being kept at the Operations Centre.
Some people living near the proposed course shared worries at a July 2025 open house. They talked about noise, extra traffic, and the chance of discs flying into their yards. Tonight, the committee will consider whether to recommend that council approve the plan.
The meeting will also go over the town’s Environmental Stewardship Strategy. That plan was first approved by council on October 12, 2021, with input from 177 residents who filled out an online survey. It covers how the town handles water, stormwater, land, energy, buildings and infrastructure, waste, and air. Staff are now suggesting council create an Environmental Advisory Committee. The group would include two or three residents, the mayor or a stand-in, and several town managers. If approved, the terms of reference would be worked out, and the committee would be up and running by October 2026.
The committee will also hear from Central Sport about sports tourism ideas and talk about future “Coffee with Council” events where residents can chat with elected officials. Several items on tonight’s agenda align with Blackfalds’ new 2026-2030 Strategic Plan, which focuses on community life, sustainability, and engagement.
