Barrie residents will have a chance to buy native trees and plants at whatever price they can afford this fall. Living Green Barrie and Pollinate Barrie are teaming up for the annual fall native plant sale with a pay-what-you-can model at St. George’s Anglican Church, 9 Granville Street.
The event is designed to remove financial barriers and help more people naturalize their yards. Pollinate Barrie has spent the winter sowing and nurturing a diverse selection of native plant species for the sale. Quantities are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Proceeds support both organizations’ environmental work, including Living Green Barrie’s goal of planting 10,000 trees in the city. As of September 2026, Living Green Barrie has planted 9,931 trees toward that target, according to its website.
Native plants are adapted to local growing conditions, require less water and fertilizer, and provide essential food and habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. This aligns with Barrie’s Bee City designation, which the city earned in 2019 as Canada’s 30th Bee City.
Living Green Barrie, a registered charity founded in 1991, says the pay-what-you-can approach makes sustainability accessible regardless of income. Residents can get more information on the organization’s website.
