Arviat, Nunavut is facing dangerous weather as high winds and extreme cold move into the area on March 12 and March 13, 2026. Environment Canada warns that blowing snow and wind chill values as low as -57°C will make being outdoors or travelling hazardous for residents.
Wind speeds are expected to reach 40 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour. These strong winds will cause blowing snow, which can lead to near-zero visibility and make it very difficult to see while driving or walking.
The temperature will feel much colder because of the wind. Overnight on March 12, the wind chill is expected to reach -56°C, and it could drop even further to -57°C on the morning of March 13.
These extreme conditions create a high risk for frostbite within minutes of being outside. Residents should take extra precautions if they must travel or spend time outdoors, particularly if they are heading out onto the coastal sea ice.
The combination of blowing snow and severe cold can quickly cause people to lose their way or suffer from life-threatening exposure. The weather agency suggests limiting travel until the conditions improve later on Friday afternoon.
