Residents of Arviat, Nunavut, are facing a week of dangerous wind chill values as a cold Arctic air mass continues to grip the region. According to Environment Canada, the extreme cold is expected to persist through the weekend, bringing a significant risk of frostbite for anyone spending time outdoors.
Observations recorded at the Arviat airport on Wednesday morning showed a temperature of -23.8°C, but the wind chill made it feel like -36. Officials anticipate wind chill values to hover around -31 this morning and -27 overnight into Thursday. These conditions are driven by northwest winds of 30 km/h with gusts reaching 50 km/h.
Health Canada advises that the risk of frostbite and windburn increases significantly when wind chill values drop below -27°C. In such extreme conditions, frostbite can develop on exposed skin within just a few minutes. Residents are urged to limit their time outside and ensure all skin is covered if they must be out in the cold.
While the cold is currently impacting much of the country, a gradual warming trend is expected in Arviat as the week progresses. Forecasters expect daily highs to range between -10°C and -7°C through next Tuesday, April 21, with overnight lows staying between -13°C and -20°C.
